I am almost six thousand words in, and I don't plan to do any serious editing until after I've completed the rough draft.
Please tell me what you think, though.
The excerpt from the prologue...
Reality
struck me with a sharp blow to the face. I lunged up more out of instinct than
awareness, because the majority of me was still out cold. When I realized that
I was tied down, I became quickly and fully aware, then startled to see the
shadow person standing over me. Try as I might, I couldn’t see the person’s
face, almost as if my kidnapper was a silhouette instead of a real person. My
senses, often extremely heightened, couldn’t pick up on this person’s identity,
much less any hidden intentions, which vampires could detect just from having
someone touch them. With the blow this man had delivered, I was more than sure
that had been enough to detect anything. How come I couldn’t?
“What’s
this? Who are you?” I asked.
“I am your doctor for the evening,” he
answered with a thick German accent.
I felt
someone shift from behind the German doctor, and immediately sensed something
familiar about this person, though what it was I couldn’t fully grasp. The
harder and longer that I sought answers, the thicker the wall became around
this person’s awareness. Still, the familiarity stunned me, because it wasn’t
an unpleasant association. I knew this unidentified stranger somehow. Who could
it be? Freddie? My mind knew the answer was “no,” because the ache in my heart
was too strong for a simple passing acquaintance. Whom else did I have in this
world, now that Iris was dead?
“I
don’t need a doctor,” I stated sarcastically.
“Fine,
then. Consider me a dentist.”
“A dentist?”
“Yes.”
“Well,
I don’t have a cavity, doc, but I could need one if you keep buttering me up
with your sweet talk,” I said and attempted to look around. I could only see
silhouettes of things, like a chair, a light above me that made it difficult to
see beyond the table I was strapped to, and a glass mirror to my left.
“You do
not understand, Reuben Redding. I am not a dentist for cavities,” he said and
snapped on a pair of gloves, then pulled out a syringe. He injected the needle
into my side and stated, “I am here to remove your fangs.”
